Stefan Milkowski to TEDTalk on Living Smaller in a Warmer World

Living Smaller in a Warmer World

Stefan Milkowski at TEDxFairbanks 2016
       Stefan Milkowski stefanmilkowski@gmail.com

This TEDTalk starts off with the understanding that many parts of the Western lifestyle are unsustainable, and that we will all need to change our lives in substantial ways. But it challenges the idea that giving things up will mean sacrifice. Instead, Milkowski argues, the solution to the global challenge of climate change might also be the reward, and no more so than in building community.

How can living smaller add pleasure and meaning to our lives? Milkowski will explore the ways in which living a simpler and more connected life can bring us closer to friends and make our lives richer while limiting our impact on the planet and on others. When we connect to a place, Milkowski claims, we have a better chance of living smaller, and of enjoying the benefits of it. As a metaphor for the small solution to the large problem, Milkowski will talk about his experiences building and living in a 288-square foot cabin.

Stefan Milkowski is an apprentice carpenter in Carpenters Local 1243. He has a masters degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and has covered business and Alaska politics for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, the Alaska Budget Report, and other publications. He is a board member at the Northern Alaska Environmental Center and helped start a Fairbanks chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, which lobbies Congress to put a price on carbon pollution.

Milkowski spends a lot of time thinking about building and about living responsibly in light of climate change. He moved to Alaska in 2005 and plans to stay.

The event will be held at the Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitor Center at 101 Dunkel St, Fairbanks on February 21, 2016 from 11 AM to 4 PM.

The few remaining seats to the live performance can be had via a corporate donation. The event will be LIVEstreamed at the NSCF Website for personal veiwing. Or even better yet - join a live viewing party at The Hub or Arctic Java!
