Sparking Innovation in Alien Minds

Dr. Ping Lan at TEDxFairbanks 2016
       Dr. Ping Lan plan@alaska.edu

The TEDTalk is based on Dr. Lan's efforts to crowdsource innovation by creating the Arctic Innovation Competition and helping growing new ventures. Although innovation has become a buzz word, many people still regard it as remote from their lives. This talk first clarifies some misconception on innovation. Then it showcases basic ways for public to carry out innovation. The conclusion of the talk is that everyone is a unique innovation engine. With proper ignition, public can regain and horn their creativity, and harvest social and economic benefits of innovation.

The Arctic Innovation Competition (AIC) is an idea contest created by Dr. Ping Lan and managed by a committee of graduate students in AIS 673 (Technology Management) and SOM faculty and staff. The goal of the AIC is to stimulate the economy through the creation and distribution of new ideas. The AIC is an extension of Dr. Ping's research into innovation.

Dr. Ping Lan is a Professor at the School of Management, University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), and the creator in 2009 of the Arctic Innovation Competition. The Competition is Alaska’s original idea contest that awards over $25,000 in cash prizes open to anyone with an innovative idea.

Prior to joining UAF in 2002, Dr. Lan worked in Canada, Australia, Thailand, United Kingdom and China as a planner, an academia, a journalist, and an entrepreneur. He dedicates to promote mass innovation and has been a keynote speaker at various international conferences and events in USA, Japan, Brazil, Russia, India and China.

The event will be held at the Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitor Center at 101 Dunkel St, Fairbanks on February 21, 2016 from 11 AM to 4 PM.

The few remaining seats to the live performance can be had via a corporate donation. The event will be LIVEstreamed at the NSCF Website for personal veiwing. Or even better yet - join a live viewing party at The Hub or Arctic Java!
